Add Different Fractions

You can only add and subtract the same kind of fractions.

To add halves, quarters, tenths, hundredths, and twentieths together, think of the fractions as money.

1/2 = 50¢ = .50 = 50/100

1/4 = 25¢ = .25 = 25/100

1/10 = 10¢ = .10 = 10/100

1/20 = 5¢ = .05 = 5/100

1/2 + 1/4 + 1/10 + 1/20 =

50¢ + 25¢ + 10¢ + 5¢ = 90¢

50 + 25 + 10 + 5 = 90

100 100 100 100 100

You could reduce 90¢ or 90/100 or 90 cents or

90 pennies to 9 dimes or nine-tenths or 9/10 or .9

Add many of each fraction

3/2 + 4/10 + 3/4 =

3(50¢) + 4(10¢) + 3(25¢)=

150¢ + 40¢ + 75¢ = 265¢

265¢ = 265/100 = $2.65

4/8 + 4/4 + 3/5 + 7/10 + 4/2 + 7/20 =

4(.125) + 4(.25) + 3(.2) + 7(.1) + 4(.5) + 7(.05) =

.5 + 1 + .6 + .7 + 2 + .35 = 5.15 or 5 15/100 or 5 3/20
