4 Types of Numbers in Research Measurement
This video illustrates the 4 types of numbers in research measurement.
Nominal: No meaning at all.
The numbers on players' jerseys do not have intrinsic meaning; the numbers do not stand for rank or position.
Ordinal: All in order.
The numbers are ordered. Ordinal numbers, 1, 2, 3, 4, represent the order of things, like first, second, third, fourth, in a list.
Interval: The distance in between numbers is valuable.
There are 10 degrees of difference between numbers on the thermometer. The temperature interval is 10 degrees. 10....20. All the numbers between two numbers.
Ratio: Relationship to zer0.
A Ratio is an expression of how numbers are related. There are 30 students to every teacher. The ratio of students to teachers is 30 to 1, written as 30:1, or 30/1. The divisor cannot be zero, but on a graph, the lines intersect at (0, 0).
